Let’s be real: your baby’s first Christmas is probably more exciting for you and the rest of the family than for the baby. Honestly, they would likely be thrilled with the boxes that your presents came with or some torn wrapping paper.

So, whether you are planning a holiday trip or cozying up at home in your matching pajamas, I’ve put together the perfect guide to help you and your little bundle of joy make the most of the most wonderful time of the year.

Baby’s First Christmas: What You Should Do

As parents, our goal should be to create a joyful, stress-free experience for both us and our baby this Christmas. Remember that it is all about cherishing the moment, not chasing perfection. So don’t stress over making everything picture-perfect.

Here are my top tips to help you survive (and enjoy!) your baby’s first Christmas:

Keep choking hazards out of your baby’s reach

The holidays are full of excitement and wonder, but for a curious little crawler, they can also come with unexpected hazards. Wrapping paper, ornaments, and shopping bags might seem harmless to us, but to a baby, they’re tempting (and potentially dangerous) playthings.

To keep the season safe and joyful, baby-proof your Christmas tree and ensure other decorations are out of reach. If possible, save gift wrapping for when your baby is asleep. If not, keep things like wrapping paper, ribbons, tape, and scissors away from their curious, little hands.

Keep your little one close and safe

The holidays can be overwhelming, especially for little ones. From loud family members and loud joke competitions to overly affectionate relatives who might even try to kiss your baby on the lips, it’s a lot for babies to handle. My baby’s pediatrician actually suggested using her ‘strict rules’ as an excuse to politely stop relatives from kissing my baby on the face.

Remember that the holiday season is also prime time for colds and flu (unfortunately, they go hand in hand.) If you are celebrating with loved ones outside your household, don’t forget to kindly ask anyone who wants to hold your baby to wash their hands first. It’s a simple step to keep everyone (especially your little one) healthy and happy!

So, whether you’re at Grandma’s house or traveling to visit family, the unfamiliar noises and new surroundings can feel daunting.

The best comfort for your baby? You.

To your baby, you are the safest and most soothing place to be. Keep your little one calm and happy by keeping them close in a baby carrier, no matter where the holidays take you.

Try your best to stick to your baby’s nap and bedtime routines

I know it’s tough with all the holiday chaos, but too many missed naps or late nights can quickly turn your baby’s holiday joy into stress. One late night might be okay, but try your best to stick to your baby’s sleep routine.

Trust me, a well-rested baby is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself this Christmas!

Start your own special traditions

Your family might have braved the snow to chop down a real Christmas tree, but is that really the best choice with a baby? Probably not.

This year, why not start your own holiday traditions? Bundle your baby up in their stroller and take a walk around the neighborhood to enjoy the Christmas lights. Read How the Grinch Stole Christmas on Christmas Eve, or open presents in your matching holiday pajamas together on Christmas morning. These simple traditions will create lasting memories for your baby.

Take plenty of pictures and videos

Your baby’s first bath, first outfit, first car ride, first taste of peanut butter—capturing all those ‘firsts’ is part of the magic of being a parent.

The holidays bring even more special moments, like your baby’s first Christmas party or unwrapping their very first present. Be fully present for these memories, but don’t forget to take plenty of photos and videos too. You will surely treasure looking back at your little one bundled up in their first Christmas outfit or excitedly pulling goodies out of their first stocking.

Baby’s First Christmas: What NOT To Do

Your baby’s first Christmas is magical, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to make it perfect. From over-the-top decorations to jam-packed schedules, some things are better left off your to-do list.

Here’s a guide to the “don’ts” of celebrating with your little one.

Don’t stress too much about the house’s Christmas decor

It’s totally fine if you don’t have the time or energy to turn your home into a winter wonderland. Sure, twinkling lights, a 7-foot Christmas tree, and a festive mantle are nice, but what really makes the holidays special is spending time with your little one.

That life-sized Santa Claus can wait until next year!

Don’t worry about cooking an elaborate holiday feast

Think about keeping it simple this year. Unless cooking is your passion and you’ve got plenty of help with the baby and the kitchen, it’s perfectly fine to skip hosting a big Christmas Eve feast or just pick up an apple pie from your favorite local baker.

Don’t blow your budget on baby gifts

I get it; it’s your baby’s first Christmas, and you want to spoil her! But honestly, she’ll be just as happy with one or two toys or even the boxes they come in. And with grandparents, aunts, and uncles around, she will definitely get plenty of love this year. If you still need baby things like a stroller or baby sleeping bags, maybe you can ask Santa to bring them for you both!

Keep your budget in check this holiday season

The Christmas season can bring a lot of pressure to overspend, but it’s important to remember that the most meaningful gifts don’t always come with a high price tag. Here are a few tips to help you stay on track financially while still making Christmas special for your baby:

  • Set a budget. Plan ahead and stick to a budget that works for your family. Simply focus on the essentials and pick a few thoughtful gifts that will truly make an impact.
  • Take advantage of sales and discounts. Keep an eye out for sales and discounts leading up to the holidays. Many retailers offer great deals during this time, so you can snag quality baby gifts at a lower cost.
  • DIY and handmade gifts. Homemade gifts or DIY projects can be incredibly meaningful and are often more cherished than store-bought items. Think about creating a personalized plush toy, knitting a cozy blanket, or making a special keepsake ornament.
  • Focus on experiences. Plan a memorable day filled with simple activities like a cozy family movie night, a walk to see Christmas lights, or baking festive treats together. These moments can be just as enjoyable and memorable as material gifts, and they help build lasting family traditions.

Don’t hesitate to say no when needed

Your extended family is likely just as excited to celebrate your baby’s first Christmas, but remember, you don’t have to attend every gathering or invite everyone over. It is perfectly fine to want to spend the holidays at home with your baby and spouse, especially for such a special first Christmas.

Take a trip to see Santa

Remember those magical trips to see Santa every year? Now, you can start this fun tradition with your little one! Although getting them to sit still on jolly ol’ Saint Nick’s lap may pose a challenge, try to snap a photo of your baby with Santa to add to a heartwarming collection of festive memories to look back on.

Share the joy of unwrapping presents

One of the best parts of Christmas Day is exchanging gifts; your little one will love joining in. It’s all part of the excitement, from tearing off the wrapping paper to playing with the boxes and ribbons. Pro tip: don’t forget to have your camera ready to capture those adorable unwrapping moments!
