As the summer days wind down and back-to-school season approaches, it is natural for kids to feel apprehension and nervousness. As your little one might be feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety about returning to the classroom, I have a lunchbox full of tips to help get your kid pumped up with the first day high.

Pre-Adventure Expedition

Who said the fun can wait ’til the school year starts? Why not go on a preschool adventure by visiting the school before the first day?

Even if your kid’s teachers don’t invite you in advance, take matters into your own hands and explore the classroom and playground. It’s like taking a sneak peek into the magical realm of learning.

Give More Than Just a Pep Talk

The little ones need to be in touch with their emotions too. This is also the best time to master the art of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), as it can help your child cope with everyday challenges and benefit them academically and socially.

Start meaningful conversations with your child about school, friends, teachers, and all the exciting activities ahead. Together, you will build character, which can help your kid tackle the challenges that come their way.

Set Goals

Move over, New Year’s resolutions; it’s time for my kid’s Back-to-School goals and ideals! Team up with your child and choose an objective for each month of the school year.

If August is all about developing friendships and September is for catching up on your readings, maybe October can be for enhancing their proficiency in Mathematics. Be sure to guide your little ones as they put their intentions into action.

Create Lunchbox Surprises

Make lunchtime much cooler by sneaking in little notes or quick sketches in your child’s lunchbox. Draw their favorite characters or jot down a hilarious inside joke to brighten their day. These surprise messages on their treats will let your kid know that you are thinking of them, even when they are away from home.

Go on a Back-to-School Shopping Spree

Ready? Set! Shop! Turn your child’s anxiety-ridden school preparation into a super-exciting annual ritual by picking out stylish shoes, snazzy outfits, or a backpack, making it official that your tot is now a certified schoolchild.

And hey, it’s probably the perfect time to refresh their stash with interesting new books and fresh school supplies since their minds at this age are like sponges that absorb knowledge from all sides.

Shake On It

Who said sending your little one off to school had to be a tearful tug-of-war? Make it more special by creating a secret handshake or a bear hug that squishes all the worries out.

Come up with a unique greeting together, like a high-five of extraordinary variations that will leave your child smiling. Trust me, you’ll both look forward to this playful moment each time.

Never, Ever Sneak Away

That said, some kids will feel more afraid when their parents disappear without warning. While it can take several weeks (or in some cases) a year for a child to be fully ready to be left at school without a parent, you should never sneak away like a ninja on a mission.

The best way to handle such a separation process is for you to sit close by, silently providing support. This way, your child can stay focused on how fun going to school is without worrying about your presence and absence.

Allow One Comfort Object

Even the mightiest superheroes need their sidekick, right? Allow your little one a comforting reminder of home, whether it is a favorite action figure or a blankie.

While these trinkets may seem like small objects to you, these little treasures can save the day and provide your child with a sense of home in an unfamiliar environment.

Don’t Compare

Remember to honor your child’s individual journey. Don’t scold them. Instead, embrace the tears, the laughter, and everything in between. Not only will it help your child work through their feelings, but also build confidence and character that will make the separation a lot easier to live with.

Seek Out and Embrace Their Passions

Don’t forget to take a moment to discover what your child is deeply passionate about. Whether it is the magical world of My Little Pony or exploring new art styles, fuel their interests with helpful tools that will keep them exploring and learning throughout the school year.

The first day of school will always be nerve-racking for every child. Regardless of how you prepare, your favorite student will still be anxious come the big day. Know that your little one’s educational journey is a thrilling and significant chapter in their life story.

Remember that your positivity and encouragement will be their trusty companions as they embark on this journey of friendship, learning, and growth. So, buckle up for this long, winding ride and use these supercharged tips to prepare your child by sending them to school feeling confident and reassured.
